april/may 2008 blog

Continuing with the miniature theme I've painted two more summery scenes this week, one of which is displayed on the Gallery page - "Garden House". The other is "Resting in the Shade". Both these paintings resulted from a photographic expedition to Blithewold a few summers ago.

With the arrival of Memorial weekend the weather is due to improve so I'm looking forward to getting out and finding more inspiring scenes to paint. I'm hoping I can get some more colorful street scenes like the one in Provincetown, Cape Cod.

I've been painting miniature landscapes again. To view them go to my Gallery then select Miniatures 2. My latest is "Sunlit Road" which I painted on Friday. The great thing about these small paintings is they take a relatively short time to complete and I am still able to be as creative as I am with a larger painting.

On a different note, I was gallery sitting this weekend for the Portsmouth Arts Guild and sold my own painting "Flags". It was a great feeling to meet a collector. Quite a rare opportunity.

My painting "Into the Trees" was awarded an Honorable Mention after being entered into the 15th Annual Regional Art Exhibit held by The Artists' Cooperative Gallery of Westerly. I'm thrilled! If you want to see the show click here for more details. The exhibition finishes on May 25th.

I also finished my painting "Spring Flowers" this week - go to the Gallery page to view it. It was a pleasure painting these pretty little fragrant flowers.

I added the finishing touches to my new painting "Flags" last week - click here to view. It'll be on display at the Portsmouth Arts Guild gallery from May 1st, so if you're in the area please come along and see it.

I started another painting on Friday. With the arrival of spring and some gorgeous weather I was inspired to do a floral still life. My back lawn is covered in little white and purple flowers at the moment, which I know some people hate, but I love them, and they smell divine. I picked a small bunch and put them in a miniature vase. Unfortunately with a busy schedule I may not have a lot of time to paint this week so my flowers will have to wait a few more days, which is quite frustrating. Some paintings I really enjoy creating and this is one of them, so I look forward to a nice quiet day when I can hopefully finish it.

Thank goodness spring has finally arrived! The weather has been just beautiful this week, and I hope it continues. Sunshine is a great motivator.

I've been working on a new painting, again inspired by Cape Cod. I've chosen a busy street scene from Provincetown which is proving quite challenging, but I'm enjoying myself. It must be the cheerful summertime subject matter - it certainly makes me want to go back to the Cape. I hope to have the finished piece on display at the Portsmouth Arts Guild for the changeover of my panel on May 1st.

It poured yesterday. The sky was dark, so my painting time was shortened. Still, I managed to finish my newest painting "Sun Umbrellas" - go to the architecture gallery to see it.

"Sun Umbrellas" was a return to my architectural paintings. I think I prefer the organic, less technical aspect of painting tree landscapes, but I liked the composition too much to resist.

I set up my panel at the Portsmouth Arts Guild yesterday. I've rented panel space there from April to July, and I'm looking forward to changing out the display every month. I'll certainly have to get busy and create some new pieces, which is actually what I managed to do today. I had quite a hectic morning but it was a lovely spring day so I had the motivation. I'm still working in the 2" cradled gessoboard format, this time at 8x8". I did the blue underpainting for a new piece I've simply called "Sun Umbrellas". It's a scene from Provincetown, Cape Cod where my husband and I visited last summer. We had a lovely time there so I have fond memories, and hopefully we'll go back this year. It's only an hour and a half drive from Rhode Island so it's a great place for a weekend getaway.
